Stalker

In person: production designer Jeannine Oppewall

Three men search a dangerous, restricted area known as the Zone looking for a secret room that supposedly grants wishes. Director Andrei Tarkovsky (Solaris, 1972) faced unusual hardships during production, including a literally toxic location and problems with film stock that forced nearly an entire film’s worth of reshoots. But the result—one of Tarkovsky's boldest and most challenging projects—has been cited as an influential work by directors and production designers, with its stark and evocative imagery credited to Tarkovsky himself as art director, working with Aleksandr Boym and set decorator Rashit Safiullin.
