Blue Note

Following his run on tour with Kehlani, Grammy-winning, Oscar-nominated singer, songwriter and producer DIXSON brings his live band to Blue Note LA on Monday, November 2, for two intimate performances blending R&amp;B and soul, with shows at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. His songwriting and production work spans Beyoncé, Kehlani, Doechii and, most recently, Victoria Monét and Tori Kelly, with songwriting credits including Beyoncé’s “Morning Dew (Donk)” and Kehlani’s “Folded.” This evening puts his own music and musicianship center stage.

In the early 20th century, the last princess of the Korean royal family under Japanese rule is forced to move to Japan to attend school, leaving behind her family, friends, and the only home she has ever known. Kim Jang-han (Park Hae-il), a childhood friend and Japanese army officer, helps to plan an escape route for her. This film, based on the real story of Princess Deokhye (Son Ye-jin), weaves fact with fiction to retell the story of a once-lost princess who stopped at nothing to return to the home she yearned for. –note written by Hannah Farkas.&nbsp;

This contemporary Western—in which Marilyn Monroe stars as saloon singer Cherie, who dreams of one day making it big in Hollywood—marked a turning point in Marilyn Monroe’s career. She had recently formed Marilyn Monroe Productions and signed a new contract with 20th Century-Fox, earning a higher salary and more creative agency in the process. For the role of Cherie, which was one of the more dramatic and serious of her career to date, she began working with Method acting pioneers Lee and Paula Strasberg, who placed an emphasis on delving into an actor’s own experiences.

This short tribute casts celebrated actress Isabella Rossellini as herself as well as various filmmakers who influenced or were influenced by her father, filmmaker Roberto Rossellini. Conceived by Isabella on the eve of her father’s centenary, she took a “docu-fantasia” concept to avant-garde filmmaker Guy Maddin after her delightful experience on his 2003 feature, The Saddest Music in the World. A beautiful cinema poem for a beloved father and artist.

Made for less than $20,000 just after the liberation of Italy by US forces, Rossellini’s first installment in his Neo-Realist Trilogy, which also includes Paisan (1946, screening on November 15) and Germany, Year Zero (1948, screening the same day), is also considered the first product of neo-realism. The devastation of Nazi-occupied Rome serves as an all-too-real backdrop for a story that could have been ripped from the headlines: a resistance leader (Aldo Fabrizi) is pursued through town as he seeks shelter and a safe escape. With “the terror of German occupation [...] still vivid in the minds of everyone,” (Patrizio Rossi, 1988) including Rossellini’s lead actress, the great Anna Magnani, Rome, Open City serves as a prototype for a... series of films that characterize the best of Italian cinema.
