WESTMINSTER, CA — A 12-year-old boy was detained on an Orange County middle school campus for bringing a knife to school Monday, the Westminster Police Department reported.

Warner Middle School staff detained the boy for bringing the "kitchen-type knife" to the campus, authorities said. Officer responded just before 11 a.m., police said.

"We are grateful school staff intervened and were able to locate the knife before anything serious occurred at the hands of the student," Westminster Police Department Chief Darin Lenyi said.

"The safety and welfare of our students and teachers is our utmost priority."The boy was released to his parents and school officials will consider disciplinary action, police said. The case was also sent to the Orange County District Attorney's Office to consider criminal charges.
