2 Horses Die Over The Weekend At Los Alamitos Race Course

The track has now had nine horses suffer racing or training deaths in 2026.

CYPRESS, CA — Two racehorses at Los Alamitos Race Course died over the weekend, one from a racing injury and one from a training injury, state horse racing officials reported.

Thirsty Gambler, a 5-year-old gelding with 11 career races and one first-place finish, was injured in Saturday's first race, though the specific injury was not clear. The official race chart says he "vied 2wide, weakened upper stretch" and finished in fourth place out of five horses.

Walking Cuervo, a 2-year-old gelding who had yet to race, died Saturday from a training injury. The industry website Equibase reported that he had a workout that day, but no mention is made of an injury. Attempts to reach Los Alamitos officials for more information were not immediately successful.

Los Alamitos has now had nine horses suffer racing or training deaths in 2026, after experiencing 19 such deaths in 2025, according to California Horse Racing Board data.
