SUNSET BEACH, CA — Orange County commuters, be aware: Pacific Coast Highway will be closed in both directions as a result of powerful King Tides.

"The closure will also allow city personnel, public safety agencies, and Caltrans to respond safely to conditions and complete necessary work," officials said in a statement.

The closure comes in anticipation of amplified king tides expected to hit the area Tuesday morning.

Residents were urged to avoid driving through flooded areas and to plan their routes carefully while the closure is in effect.

"Today, several drivers tried to drive through flooded areas and needed rescue by public safety personnel," officials said. "Driving through floodwaters puts you and first responders at risk. Turn around and find another route."
