Cops Injured, 5 Arrested During Beach Brawl

Officers drew a line in the sand with a woman seen drinking in public at Tower 11 in Huntington; a group nearby turned on the authorities.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA —Five people were arrested after a massive fight broke out between citizens and police in Huntington Beach, Wednesday night, police say.

Officers on patrol saw a woman with an alcoholic beverage near Tower 11 Wednesday evening, police reported. They contacted her to inform her public drinking was not allowed.

Several people she was with then turned on the police, officials said.

During the attack and "large" fight that followed, several officers sustained injuries. One officer was taken to the hospital by ambulance and was expected to recover fully, according to police reports.

"This is a good reminder to everyone that we have a no-tolerance approach to alcohol on our beaches," the department said in a statement.

The fight was in no way connected to the U.S. Open of Surfing taking place near the Huntington Beach Pier.
