Especially High Tides Expected This Week

Starting today and lasting through Thursday, high tides along the Southern California shoreline are going to be a lot higher than usual.

Called “king tides,” these especially high tides are a twice yearly event.

Tides are expected to peak Wednesday at 7.1 feet above the average low tide, a National Weather Service representative told KPCC.

This occurs when the sun and moon sync up in a way that creates maximum pull on the Earth's waters, the radio station reported.

Last year at this time, a similar king tide caused flooding in Sunset Beach in North Orange County.
