Five Los Alamitos High Students Named National Merit Semifinalists

The young scholars are competing for about 8,300 scholarships worth more than a combined $32 million.

Five Los Alamitos High School students have been selected as National Merit Scholarship Program semifinalists, officials announced today.

The students are

  • Nicholas H. Burke
  • Hyun S. Cho
  • Alaina R. Liu
  • Ryan R. Miller
  • Yashna M. Nandan 

The five are among at least 200 Orange County semifinalists and about 16,000 semifinalists across the nation in the 58th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

The students will compete for about 8,300 scholarships, worth more than a combined $32 million. About 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to make it to the finals and just more than half of the finalists will win a scholarship.

The students were judged by their scores on standardized test scores, their grades, an essay and extracurricular activities.
