Los Al Schools Get New Director of Special Education
Before taking the position, Dr. Michael Keller served as coordinator of special education the Garden Grove Unified School District.

Dr. Michael Keller, a Belmont Shore resident, was named the director of special education for the Los Alamitos Unified School District, officials say.
As the director, Keller will manage of special education services for students in preschool through adult programs at the district.
According to a district news release, before taking the position, Keller served as coordinator of special education at the Garden Grove Unified School District, where he managed special education programs and services for over 5,000 students.
At that district, Keller also worked as school psychologist for kindergarten through 12th grade levels, a school psychology department chairman and a school counselor for preschool through 8th grade levels.
He has worked as an adjunct professor at the University of Southern California, teaching courses on learning theory, and an adjunct lecturer at California State University Long Beach, teaching courses on behavioral assessment, school-wide crisis response and intervention.
“Dr. Keller is an expert in multiple areas, and we are thrilled that he is joining the Los Al team,” said LAUSD Superintendent Sherry Kropp in a written statement.
Keller earned his doctorate of education in educational leadership with an emphasis in educational psychology from the University of Southern California. He also has a master’s degree in counseling and school counseling from Cal State University Long Beach, as well as school psychology credentials from the college. He holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in history from the University of Arizona.
According to LAUSD, Keller’s professional development activities include leading training sessions on positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS), response to instruction and intervention (RtI2), Professional Assault Crisis Training (Pro-Act™), school-wide crisis response and functional behavioral assessment and intervention.
Keller lives in Belmont Shore with his wife, Allison, a former school psychologist and a current stay-at-home mom. They have two children: Owen, who will complete kindergarten this year, and Ainsley, who will enter preschool in the fall.
