Los Alamitos-Based Women's Water Polo Team Plays for Gold

The US Water Polo Team, which practices in Los Alamitos, will play Spain today for the Olympic gold.

The US Women’s Water Polo Team will go for the gold today in the Olympic Finals.

The Los Alamitos-based team is undefeated so far in the Olympics, but today’s game will be a rematch against the only opponent they have yet to beat. The women will square off against the Spanish team at noon today. The two teams played and tied one another in the preliminary round last week.

The final score was 9-9.

Despite their undefeated record, it hasn’t been an easy path for the US team, which practices at the community pool at the Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base.

They squeaked into the gold medal round Tuesday after a nail-biter against Australia that went into overtime. They were ahead by one with a second left when the Australians were awarded a penalty shot, which they were able to capitalize on.

But the Americans took no chances in overtime scoring twice to win 11-9.

Goalie Betsy Armstrong said she knows what the team must do to win the gold: “I think we just need to keep the same mindset,” Armstrong said.
