Los Alamitos Fugitive Charged in Neighbor's Murder

Eleazar Vargas, believed to have fled to Mexico, was charged today with his neighbor's murder.

A 41-year-old man wanted for allegedly gunning down a neighbor in Los Alamitos last weekend was charged today with murder.

Eleazar Vargas is accused of killing 39-year-old Sangju Sung, who was shot about 5 p.m. Sunday in the 3500 block of Catalina Street.

Vargas also faces a sentence-enhancing allegation of the personal discharge of a gun causing death, according to court records.

Sung was married and a father of two children, according to Senior Deputy District Attorney Troy Pino.

ā€œHe just went outside to smoke a cigarette and then texted his wife that the defendant was out there staring at him,ā€ Pino said. ā€œThe defendant is known in the neighborhood as a bully of sorts.ā€

Vargas, who was believed to be in Mexico, fled the scene when police arrived, the prosecutor said.
