Los Alamitos Goes Back To School...Earlier In 2018
Los Alamitos Unified School District will send students back to school sooner than usual in 2018. How will the new calendar affect you?

LOS ALAMITOS, CA — No more teachers, no more books! yes, Los Alamitos Unified School District families better pack in all the summer they can in 2018, as the LAUSD has determined they will make some big changes to the 2018/19 school year calendar. LAUSD kids will return school on Aug. 8, 2018. That's three weeks sooner than the 2017 back to school date at the end of August.
Make a note, as well, that school will be out for summer of 2019 on May 30, 2019.
Other schedule changes include the whole Thanksgiving break week, rather than just Wednesday through Friday in 2018, and a "bonus week" off, from Feb. 18 through 22 of 2019.
Many residents will be forced to change their summer plans, but the district maintains their committee made the best decision possible for students. A parent survey from 2016/17 school year also showed approval for the new school calendar.

"This summer will be rough," District Superintendent Sherry Kropp said in a recent statement, with only seven weeks of summer this year. "We are excited about moving forward with our new calendar."
Even with the shortened break, there are advantages for students, such as more time for high school students to prepare for Advanced Placement tests, a winter break in the first semester, and a more "year-around" approach so that student lessons won't be forgotten over summer break.

"AP Tests are given in May, at the same time across the nation," Kropp said. "If kids have another six weeks to learn the material, that raises pass rates."
