OC Man Armed With Rifle Shot By Officers, Police Say

The 29-year-old man was yelling "the devil was trying to kill" him while sitting on the roof of a car in a parking lot in Orange County.

WESTMINSTER, CA — A 29-year-old man was shot by police in an Orange County parking lot Friday, Dec. 8 after he shouted that "the devil was trying to kill" him before aiming his gun at officers, the Westminster Police Department reported.

The man, identified only as a Huntington Beach resident, was given emergency aid and taken to the UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange. His condition was unknown as of Sunday evening.

Westminster police officers were called to Westminster Boulevard and Willow Lane, near a Motel 6 and In-N-Out, around 4:25 p.m. to respond to reports of a man "acting erratically" while sitting on the roof of a car in his underwear.

Police asked guests in the nearby motel rooms to remain indoors and away from windows and doors, Cmdr. Kevin MacCormick told The Orange County Register.

While officers spoke with the man, he pointed a rifle at them and at least one police officer responded with gunfire, according to the WPD news release.

The man fell off the car and began walking toward officers before collapsing, police said.

The Westminster Police Department and the Orange County District Attorney's Office were conducting separate investigations into the shooting.
