Storm Damages Pier In Seal Beach Friday, Prompts Closure
Seal Beach officials announced the closure Friday afternoon, after a portion of the pier was damaged due to high surf and wind.
SEAL BEACH, CA — The Seal Beach Pier was closed by city officials Friday afternoon due to damage reported during this week's storm and associated high surf and wind, authorities said Friday.
Seal Beach Police Department Capt. Nick Nicholas said that the pier experienced high surf and wind conditions Thursday night and was preemptively closed by officials out of "an abundance of caution."
A portion of the pier was damaged overnight, including the boat ramp used by oil platform workers, he said.

The pier will remain closed until it has been repaired and deemed safe for public use, and there was no immediate timeline offered by authorities. The city will provide residents with updates on the pier repairs as information becomes available, Nicholas said.
"Seal Beach Marine Safety, Public Works and Police Departments, along with the Orange County Fire Authority, had been actively monitoring the storm and taking steps to prepare for any issues related to extreme weather," Nicholas said in a statement. "City personnel will determine the extent of the pier damage and continue to monitor any upcoming weather events."
