Sand Berm Construction Starts In Seal Beach This Month

The berm is designed to control shoreline erosion and run-off, according to the City of Seal Beach.

SEAL BEACH, CA — The seasons are changing, and so is the city's shoreline in Seal Beach.

According to officials, the city is hard at work constructing the annual winter sand berm, located from the Seal Beach Pier easterly to Dolphin Avenue.

The construction of the berm started Oct. 23 and will last through November. The work will be carried about by Crew Inc., city officials said.

In addition, this fall the city will concurrently perform "back-passing," which is a process of removing beach sand from the west side of the pier and bringing it to the east side of the pier.

The process is done periodically due to wave run-up transporting sand from the east beach to the west beach, officials said.

The Contractor will stage their equipment in the 10th Street beach parking lot. Public Works
will have a portion of the parking lot coned-off for the Contractor starting on Monday, October
23, 2023, in preparation for the work.
