SEAL BEACH, CA — The Seal Beach Police Department announced on Monday it will step up its traffic enforcement operations throughout May as part of National Bicycle Safety Month.

The agency said it will focus on the "most dangerous driver behaviors," including speeding, failing to yield to a pedestrian or cyclists, making illegal turns and driving through a stop sign or red light.

"The days are longer, and the weather is pleasant, making for ideal conditions to go on a bike ride," Seal Beach Police Chief Philip Gonshak said. "Drivers, please share the road so we may all get to places safely."

Bicycle riders are also encouraged to ride safely, Seal Beach police said. Some of the safety recommendations from the department include using lights at night, wearing a properly secured helmet regardless of age and having cyclists ride in the same direction as traffic.

The traffic enforcement operations are funded by a grant from the state's Office of Traffic Safety, Seal Beach police said.
