Stanton Man Attacks Family With Box Cutter, Sentenced To Jail

WESTMINSTER, CA —A 22-year-old Stanton man pleaded guilty Thursday and was immediately sentenced to nearly six years in jail for a slashing attack on his parents, teenage sister and live-in girlfriend.

Thomas Oakland Kuranda pleaded guilty to attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, both felonies, and misdemeanor counts of assault with a deadly weapon, corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant, and criminal threats.

In the early morning hours of Sept. 28, 2018, deputies were called to the 11100 block of Irwin Drive and found the three injured family members, along with the suspect's girlfriend, who had a facial wound, according to Carrie Braun of the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

The suspect's 53-year-old father was the most severely injured, and the other three were treated for "mild to moderate injuries," Braun said, adding that none of the injuries were considered life-threatening at the time.

Kuranda got into an argument with his relatives that escalated into a physical conflict, in which he allegedly used "a box cutter type blade" to slash his father, 57-year-old mother and 14-year-old sister, Braun said.

Kuranda, in custody for nearly one year, was sentenced to 2,184 days in jail and placed on five years of formal probation as well as ordered to participate in a batters' treatment program, according to court records.
