Even if you are able to walk away from a serious car accident, it is important to know the signs and symptoms of brain damage because some show up immediately while others may not be noticeable for days or weeks after the collision. Especially since regular occurrences like falls and car accidents are the top causes for brain injuries in the United States, everyone should have a basic understanding of some the warning signs. For example, the signs for a concussion can be very subtle, including headaches, difficultly recalling certain details, feeling tired, and experiencing mood changes, but without the proper diagnosis, they may go untreated.
If you are facing more severe symptoms like unconsciousness, blurry vision, nausea, ringing ears, confusion, and trouble speaking coherently, you may have suffered a traumatic brain injury, which is far more common than one would expect. Each year in the United States, there are about 1.5 million people who suffer a traumatic brain injury and more than 5.3 million people live with disabilities caused by a TBI. TBIs come in two different forms: open head injuries, which are penetrations of the skull usually by an object, and closed head injuries, where the head is hit with blunt force but there is no penetration of the skull. Although open head injuries are generally more graphic, closed head injuries can be just as serve and are much harder to assess without proper medical treatment. Therefore, it is always best to consult with a medical professional prior to clearing yourself of any damage.
