Woman Dies In Southbound 5 And 22 Freeway Crash

A pickup truck passenger died when that vehicle slammed into a bed of a tow truck, CHP said. The driver remains in critical condition.

GARDEN GROVE, CA —A woman was killed in a two-car crash on the southbound 5 Freeway in Orange, officials said.

At approximately 8:30 a.m., a driver heading north of the 22 Freeway slammed into a tow truck.

The vehicle became lodged underneath the flatbed part of the trailer, in what is known as "under-ride," according to California Highway Patrol officer reports.

"A woman, who was the passenger in the truck, was killed in that crash," CHP Officer Florentino Olivera told Patch. The driver, a male of unknown age, was last known to be in critical condition.

CHP is in the early stages of the investigation, and the SIG alert on the HOV and #1 lanes were scheduled to remain in place until approximately 11:30 a.m., Olivera said.

Preliminary indications were that the truck was driving at a high rate of speed, he said.
