2 Men Died In Fiery Crash On Central Expressway

BREAKING: The roadway was closed overnight.

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA – Two men died in a car crash Saturday evening in Sunnyvale, a spokesman for the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety said.

The crash was reported at 5:35 p.m. on the Central Expressway just east of North Bernardo Avenue.

A two-door coupe was traveling east on the Central Expressway when the driver lost control of the car and it struck a tree in the center median of the road, Capt. Vince Chetcuti said. The car caught fire.

Bystanders were able to get one person out of the vehicle and public safety officers got the other person out.

Paramedics tried to save both lives but both died at the scene, Chetcuti said.

Both directions of the Central Expressway were closed between North Bernardo Avenue and North Mary Avenue. Chetcuti said that area of the expressway will probably be closed until midnight or 1 a.m. Sunday.
