50 Safest California Cities List: Los Altos Moves Up A Notch

The 2017 rankings by SafeWise were compiled using FBI crime report statistics and population data.

LOS ALTOS, CA -- Crime is down in the city of Los Altos, according to a newly published list by SafeWise of the 50 safest cities in California for 2017.

With .20 violent crimes reported per 1,000 people and 10.88 property crimes reported per 1,000 people, Los Altos, a city with a population of some 30,000, has moved up on the list -- from No. 21 last year to No. 12 this year, according to SafeWise.

To identify its list of the 50 safest cities in California, SafeWise reviewed the 2015 FBI crime report statistics and population data. SafeWise then eliminated all cities with fewer than 10,000 residents as well as any cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI.

From there, SafeWise evaluated the remaining cities, narrowing the list down based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape and robbery), and property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft and motor vehicle theft) in each city. To level the playing field, Safewise calculated the likelihood of these crimes occurring out of 1,000 people in each city.
