A preliminary investigation found that the driver of the Lexus was traveling northbound when it crossed the median and entered the southbound lanes, striking multiple vehicles, CHP said.

The Lexus driver and the driver of another vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene, according to CHP. Another driver was taken to a hospital as a precaution. Authorities had not released additional information about the victims.

CHP is investigating what caused the crash and how the Lexus crossed into oncoming traffic.

All southbound lanes of I-280 were initially closed as crews cleared debris, with traffic diverted at Magdalena Avenue. Caltrans assisted at the scene. The lanes reopened later Thursday evening.
