Discover Thailand

This country is one of our favorites, and we have been there many times. I only have to suggest a visit to Asia, and Roy, my husband, says “yes, as long as we can stay at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Bangkok”. I think this is his favorite hotel in all the one hundred and twenty different countries he has been to. It is a five star luxury property on the side of the Chao Phraya River. They give our clients a room upgrade, early check in and late check out, and a free breakfast plus other amenities since we are a part of the Signature Travel Network consortium. Big savings for our clients, which is a good thing.

Thailand is comprised of lively cities rich with ancient temples, mystical venues, cultural celebrations and exotic scenery. You don’t have to travel far to find yourself amid magnificent mountains, lush jungles and pristine beaches. Modern Thai society has been shaped by Indian, Lao, Burmese, Cambodian and Chinese influences. The food is a wonderful blend of spices, and outstanding dishes from all these different cultures. With Buddhism as the dominant religion, the Thai people believe in a spiritual well being that emphasizes positive living. This “sanuk” lifestyle seeks fun and enjoyment in all aspects of everyday life, and can be seen in the welcoming nature and carefree attitudes of its people.

It is easy to emulate sanuk with all the pleasures that Thailand has to offer. The best beaches in the world are here, with warm pristine safe waters in unspoiled nature that defines tropical paradise. As the biggest island in Thailand, Phuket is a favorite destination for us. Wonderful snorkeling and scuba diving are found throughout. After some relaxation in the sun, you can trek into the shade of the tropical jungle for amazing views, marvelous waterfalls and exotic wildlife. Khao Yai National Park is the home to the amazing Heo Suwat Waterfall and inhabitants include elephants, tigers, macaques, gibbons and an array of bird species. We still laugh about our last visit to a nice beach there. My husband Roy put his new straw hat on the sand and went in for a swim. A monkey came out of the forest, picked up Roy’s hat and ran off laughing. Roy was cross with me because I didn’t stop him. I couldn’t stop laughing and besides, I couldn’t have got there faster than the monkey. We got the largest prawns I have ever seen from a chap cooking them at a little stand on the beach which was a marvelous inexpensive lunch each day.

The city of Bangkok is an exciting place, filled with ornate temples, spectacular food in marvelous restaurants, smashing markets and the floating ones are a must, and is a truly wonderful place for shopping. We usually visit a tailor, and have a suit made in 24 hours. Wonderful silks, and it is very reasonable to have things made. Last time I had cushions made, and bought table runners and napkins made of some exotic material. Even if you aren’t a shopper, and don’t want anything in particular, I promise you that something will jump out at you saying “buy me”. When I look around my home and see something I bought there, I think, how on earth did I get that home. Paintings are a weakness of mine, and I have several which are unusual that we bought on a trip.

There are so many temples to see, but you should go to Wat Trimitir, which features a 5.5 ton Buddha, Wat Po. Wat Po is the largest and oldest temple in Bangkok. One cannot forget about the magnificent Grand Palace, a true sight to be seen. The tastiest cuisine is available at the street stalls and tiny sidewalk restaurants. Food is very cheap, and safely prepared. Fill up on curries, soups, fresh fish, rice, noodles and fruit shakes all day. The night markets are my favorites, and a great time to experience the culture of the city that never sleeps. Do go to a Thai dinner and dance show at Sala Rim Naam. Great food and a wonderful cultural experience to see the classical Thai dancing.
