Fairytale Hideaways
You should always stay in a castle for a few days while you are in Scotland. An experience of a lifetime and not to be missed
Fairytale Hideaways
I always tell people that they should stay one or two nights at a castle when they visit Scotland. They are full of history romantic locations, and you can experience acres of secluded grounds to wander in, complete with lochs (lakes) rivers – great fishing – and woodlands. You will be treated to a wonderful four poster bed.
Here are my favorite castles for you to review.

This is the one I know the most. At the foot of Ben Nevis, Scotland’s highest munro (mountain) and one I climbed many times. Completed in 1866, by William Scarlett who while serving with his regiment in Canada, met and married his American belle, Helen Magruder. The newly weds had a large staff to look after the 39,000 acre estate.
Glengarry Castle Hotel, Invergarry

This was the seat of the Chefs of the MacDonnells and set alight by the British in 1654. From the ashes, this present building was built in 1869. Situated on the edge of Loch Oich.
Stonefield Castle Hotel, Loch Fyne
A lovely location, much loved by the Campbells of Muchairn, built in 1746. The hotel retains much of its original furnishings, known for its great restaurant, local produce and seafood from the nearby fishing village of Tarbert.
Dalhousie Castle, near Edinburgh
Clam Ramsay retained a hold over their castle for longer than any other family in the history of Scotland. This 13th century fortification is eight miles south of Edinburgh. Dine in the barrel vaulted Dungeon Restaurant.
Mingary Castle, Ardnamurchan, Lochaber
Lovely views over the Sound of Mull, on 25,000 acres. 4 lovely suites which sleeps 10.
Brodie Castle, near Inverness
The ancestral home of the Brodie clan for over 400 years. Near the stunning beaches of the Moray Fifth, and 30 minutes drive from the Culloden battlefield and on the brink of the whisky trail at Speyside. You and up to 13 guets are spoilt for choice on this 175 acre estate.
Dornoch Castle Hotel, Sutherland
It has a 500 year history, bitter feuds aside, it now offers fine dining served in the original vaulted dungeon.
Crossbasket Castle, near Glasgow
Impeccably restored, this is a wonderful location, less than half an hour away from the hub of the city. Overlooking the Calder River, which has beautiful waterfalls and a large stretch of woodland.
A great idea for you to consider if you are considering a family reunion to trace your Scottish background. Rent the entire castle for your stay, complete with chef, staff, and a chauffeur. You will have a fantastic experience, perhaps even a couple of ghosts.
