Insight into American travelers and their use of travel agents

I read a lot of reports and survey and this one caught my attention and I wanted to share it with my Patch readers.

In 2013 MMGY asked 3000 travelers, and again in 2015 if they had used a travel agent to book their last vacation. Where just 12% had in 2013, the number rose by 33% to 16% in 2015. When asked why, usage was up significantly in eight of nine categories, including to book a hotel, get inspiration about a destination, book a vacation package, buy insurance, book a cruise, book a rental car, and to buy attraction and event tickets. The only category that did not increase was to buy an airline ticket. However, a travel agent can definitely find great fares especially for overseas, business and first class tickets.

When asked about the likelihood of their using the services of a travel agent in the next two years, the number rose again by almost 30%.

92% said they want to work with traditional agents because of their knowledge of destinations and travel service providers. They have the experience to help me book a better trip than I could on my own. They also have the ability to provide an extra level of service when things go wrong.

The two generations most likely to use a travel professional were the Mature Traveler, whom we would expect, and the Millennials, whom we did not expect. The Millennials said they did want to make sure they were getting the best price, and not spend their time doing it themselves. When going to an unusual destination, they wanted to deal with someone who had been there. They wanted help in choosing a destination, and recommending a hotel based on what they need.
