The rankings are based on town size and the FBI Unified Crime Report.

Real Estate blog Movoto has published a listing of the safest small towns in the United States, with Los Altos Hills landing in a tie at number 8. Towns between 5,000 and 25,000 people were ranked, based on the 2012 FBI Unified Crime Report.

Here’s what Movoto had to say about Los Altos Hills:

“There were no murders rapes reported here in 2012, and this town had only 12 robberies and 49 assaults per 100,000 people.

“The most impressive number, however, was in property crime. Los Altos Hills had the second best rank for crimes of that type, with only 554 crimes of that type per 100,000 people.

“In fact, this town had the second lowest total crime, just behind Zionsville, and which meant locals had a 1 in 163 chance of being the victim of crime.”
