Past, Present & Future Dynamics of Alpine Plants under Climate Change in California & Nevada at Los Altos Library

Join us for a talk by Adelia Barber exploring California’s alpine ecosystem, and the unique monitoring program that is at the forefront of climate change research for high alpine plants. The GLORIA project (The Global Observation Research Initiative in Alpine Environments) is a long-term international monitoring program established in 2001 to monitor the impact of climate change on alpine ecosystems; the network has now expanded to over 115 sites worldwide. 29 high summits in California & Nevada are currently monitored using the GLORIA protocol by a volunteer network of botanists and scientists. Adelia’s talk will focus on the preliminary results from both plant surveys and temperature loggers gathered between 2004 and 2013 on California & Nevada summits. She will also talk about some of the ways to get involved in the GLORIA efforts in North America.

Adelia is the current director of GLORIA California, a non-profit research organization dedicated to climate change research in California’s high alpine zones. She holds a PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from UC Santa Cruz, and did her undergraduate work at Brown University.
