I love traveling by train. Its relaxing, you see the countryside, great service and outstanding cuisine no matter which country you are in.

Traveling on one of these trains, you will have a window seat to the world.

This embodies the grandeur of travel, taking you back to a time when trains served as the only connection to distant lands. Here are some memorable rail journeys to inspire your next adventure.

Switzerland. The Bernina Express takes you over 196 bridges and through 55 tunnels from the posh ski town of St. Moritz to Tirano, Italy in just over three hours.

France. The high speed TGV takes you through wonderful countryside connecting 200 cities within France and beyond.

Peru. Board the Hiram Bingham by Orient Express for the most luxurious approach to the mythical land of the ancient Incas. It takes seven hours roundtrip from the town of Cusco to the high plains of the Amazon, a region to the crest of Machu Picchu.

South Africa. A magnificent mobile 5 star hotel, the Blue Train has traversed South Africa from Pretoria to Cape Town with Kings on board. A wonderful 27 hour journey.

Australia. A three day journey on the Ghan offers a wonderful view of Australia and its vast diverse landscape from the Southern edge to the Northern tip. A comfortable way to see the Outback.

Asia. The Eastern and Oriental Express takes you from the tumult of Bangkok to rice fields doted with water buffalo and its 24 hour journey to Georgetown

Canada. The Rocky Mountaineer has four rail routes that carry passengers from British Columbia and Alberta thru some of the most spectacular scenery in the world.

USA. The Grand Canyon Railway is a vintage train which travels from Williams, Arizona taking two hours to get to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. A wonderful journey anytime of year.

Scotland. My favorite is the luxury train – The Royal Scotsman which can be a 2, 4, 5 or a 7 night journey in absolute luxury. With a maximum of 36 passengers on board, from April to October, visit local castles, grand country estates, fishing, golf, and see a traditional whisky distillery. This train even does a seven night journey thru Wales and England covering the highlights such as Bath, York, Chester, Cambridge.
