San Antonio Road Streetscape Project Starts Monday

Construction starts Monday on a long-planned streetscape project that will revitalize a busy portion of North San Antonio Road near downtown Los Altos.

Almost one mile of the busy thoroughfare from West Edith Avenue to First Street will be overhauled with wider sidewalks, improved pedestrian crosswalks, and new median landscaping.

And, in an effort to improve visual aesthetics along the roadway, a four-foot-high decorative planted wall screen will be built to obscure views of cars in Parking Plaza 3 near Main Street. Rain gardens will also be built in Parking Plaza 3 to capture storm water runoff.

During construction, about 50 parking spaces in the adjacent South parking plaza that runs along San Antonio Road between Main and Third streets will be unavailable for public use while work is completed on the sidewalk expansion portion of the project.

The widened sidewalks will be designed to comply with federal Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines which require easy accessibility for disabled people and those pushing strollers.

In addition, traffic flow on San Antonio Road may occasionally be reduced to one lane in either direction while the median landscape improvements are under way.

City officials estimate that the $1.3 million project will be completed in April.
