Tahiti - The Society Islands

Explore paradise in the South Pacific

Tahiti – Society Islands

Maeva – A warm Tahitian Welcome

I first went to Tahiti 50 years ago, and stayed at Club Med on the island of Moorea with a couple of days in the capital Papeete then went by boat to Moorea. There were very few hotels at that time on the islands. There are some 130 islands under French rule, consisting of five archipelagoes in the south central Pacific Ocean, between latitudes 7 and 27 degrees and longitudes 134 and 155. There are 14 islands in the Marqueses, 900 miles north east of Tahiti, and few people go there. The main islands are Moorea, Bora Bora, Tahaa, Huahine, Raiatea.

Other popular islands in the south pacific are the Cook Islands, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, and of course, Hawaii. All very different as regards culture, music, and food. I would go to the Cook Islands and Fiji first. Of course Hawaii is closest to the West Coast, but tends to be more expensive than all the others and more commercial.

The Tahiti islands are famous for black pearls, and vanilla beans.

The cuisine is of course, French, and is very popular with Europeans for a honeymoon destination. There are several luxury hotels today in the islands. The most popular and beautiful island is Bora Bora, with many over the water bungalows. I think this one is my favorite. Tahiti tends to be more expensive than some of the other islands in the South Pacific, and it is because of the French connection.

Over the years, I have been many times to this region, and visited all the various islands. It is very casual, and most people wear a sarong. I have returned home many times not even unpacking my suitcase. I buy a couple of sarongs to wear over my swimsuit. People spend time exploring the lagoons on a glass bottom boat, and seeing the splendid array of fish. Snorkeling and scuba diving are outstanding.

Today, I would recommend you taking a cruise, and seeing several of the islands. I read a brochure this week which I think is worth checking out. I’ve had the pleasure of taking all these cruises.
