What's Open and What's Closed on Thanksgiving Day

What can you do on Thanksgiving Day? Banks and government offices are closed, but if you want to play, there's a few places that cater to the people who don't have to cook on Thanksgiving Day, or want a break after it's all done.

Thanksgiving has brought a peacefulness and relaxed feeling to the Valley. And while you can't bank or check out books at the library, you can do other things. Really. The very-popular means that throngs in the thousands will be in downtown San Jose, and local institutions are givng everyone a reason to linger longer, too.

Closed:

  • Banks - Thursday, and many on Friday
  • Los Altos City Hall - Thursday and Friday
  • Los Altos Hills Town Hall - Thursday and Friday
  • County Offices - Thursday only, Friday limited services
  • Los Altos Library and Woodland Library (Thursday and Friday)
  • Mission Trails Waste Systems (Los Altos) - No Thursday pickup; Pickup resumes Friday. Friday pickup day is delayed to Saturday.
  • Greenwaste Recovery Systems (Los Altos Hills) - No Thursday pickup; Pickup resumes Friday. Friday pickup day is delayed to Saturday.

- Movie theaters: Of course. Check listings for your favorites, such as Cinemark Theaters on Shoreline, Aquarius, Stanford Theater or CineArts Palo Alto Square in Palo Alto

- Tech Museum of Innovation: Open on holidays, including Thanksgiving, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 pm.

- Downtown Ice San Jose: Downtown Ice is open 2 to midnight, so be ready to glide (or slide) under the stars and lighted palm trees during special Thanksgiving hours. Market Street, across from Plaza de Cesar Chavez; Tickets $13-15. Downtown Ice is open daily through Jan 29, 2012.

- Pacific Ballet Academy has open classes for adults, 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., part of its expanded adult schedule. 295 B Polaris Ave., Mountain View
