SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA — Eight new cases of COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, have been confirmed in Santa Clara County, bringing the county's total to 32, officials said Saturday.

"It’s not unexpected to have more cases," the county Public Health Department said in a tweet. The county had announced four new cases on Friday, and has confirmed new cases nearly every day for more than a week.

The outbreak in Santa Clara County, whose first case was confirmed in late January, has become one of the largest in the state. Other coronavirus outbreaks have been reported in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and elsewhere in Northern California.
