Demi Lovato Concert Review

Demi Lovato performs at the San Jose State Event Center on Tuesday, July 17. See what I have to say about this past Disney star's inspiring show.

If I were to use only one word to best describe 19-year-old Demi Lovato, it would be underrated.

I wish people wouldn’t immediately form an opinion on her because of her involvement with Disney Channel.

After seeing her live in concert, I want everyone to just take a moment to appreciate the set of pipes on this girl. I can honestly say that she has one of the most impressive voices in the music industry today.

Fans in the San Jose area got to experience the amazing talent that is Demi Lovato on Tuesday, July 17 at the San Jose State University Event Center.

San Jose was one of the last few stops on Lovato’s summer tour as she continues to promote her latest album, Unbroken.

Accompanying Lovato on her tour is pop rock band Hot Chelle Rae, an all-boy group that rose to fame after their single “Tonight Tonight” went double platinum.

Unlike many other concerts that I’ve been to, the opening act was solid. Hot Chelle Rae’s vocals were good and they seemed happy to be there; that’s usually the most you can ask for in an opening act in my opinion.

It makes sense that Lovato’s opening act would be so-so, I mean, why take away any of the spotlight from her? (Not that anyone could, of course.) Lovato’s setlist included songs from all three of her albums (Don’t Forget, Here We Go Again, and Unbroken) as well as covers of other artists’ songs. Lovato’s band was fantastic, the music complemented her vocals spectacularly.

What set her performance apart from other concerts that I’ve been to was the brutal simplicity of it all. There wasn’t much choreography or outfit changes or flashy set designs; it was all about the music. It just goes to show that Lovato doesn’t need anything other than just her powerhouse of a voice. With that simplicity also comes the realization that Lovato is a real girl, not just this perfect celebrity that the media often portrays stars like Lovato to be.

Just this year Lovato was discharged from rehab after fighting a very open battle against depression, bulimia, and substance abuse. Lovato talked openly about her struggles throughout the show, thanking her fans for standing by her and letting them know that she will always be there for them as well. The feel-good message that Lovato sent out was inspiring and genuine. With most of her fan base being made up of young girls, I think it’s spectacular that a star with such influence wants to talk about eating right and rising above peer pressure

I’m not going to lie; I had my doubts about going to see her. But after attending her concert, I definitely consider myself a Demi Lovato fan. Even if you’re not into pop music, go for her voice. The final stops for her tour can be found on her website, http://demilovato.com/. This girl is a star and I can’t wait to see what she’s going to accomplish in the years to come.
