Children and Screen Time

Screen time is an unavoidable issue in modern parenting.  Computers and televisions can be useful educational tools but they can also be a distraction. The trick for any parent is finding a balance. In this post we'll take a look at screen time recommendations as well as research into the pros and cons related to this topic.

 Screen Time Recommendations

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) lays down some pretty strict guidelines concerning screen time.   The AAP recommends school age children spend no more than 1-2 hours a day total in front of any screen whether it’s a computer, television, tablet or smart phone.  This time should be spent watching high quality, educational content. The AAP also proposes on outright ban on screen time for children aged two and under.

Research on Screen Time

Research into the effects of screen time provides mixed results.  One study found that exposure to television can alter a child's behavior.  Researchers kept a television running in the background as kids played.  Results showed that when the TV was off the children would play with one toy for long for longer periods of time.

Another study found limiting access to computers and televisions increased sleep quality, academic performance and behavior.  Researchers noted the average child spends a whopping 40 hours a week in front of a screen! The study authors seem to be suggesting time and not the activity itself is the primary issue.

What to do?

The AAP recommends setting up a screen free zone in your home.  Also, setup a schedule for when children can watch television or play on the computer.  Finally, turn this time into a family activity.  This is a great way to engage your child in conversation.  You can talk about the show you just watched to find out your child's favorite parts or to see what they understood.  Checking in is important especially during the summer season when the temptation to just sit and stare is at its highest.
