Correctional Peace Officers to Socialize Dogs on Friday at San Martin Animal Shelter

Carrying a big bag of new dog toys, members of the Santa Clara County Correctional Peace Officers’ Assn. will descend upon the San Martin Animal Shelter to play with, groom and socialize canines from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11.

“We have kong-style toys, rope toys and squeaky toys,” said Lance Scimeca, SCCCPOA president. Members of the organization work in the county jails as correctional deputies and officers. “This is the exact opposite of our regular jail work,” he commented.

“We’ll have a blast entertaining the dogs, and they’ll benefit from play, which greatly reduces stress due to confinement and boredom and makes them more adoptable.”

The animal shelter, which has a strong volunteer force, serves unincorporated areas of the county, evaluating each animal brought in and attempting to place these pets in new permanent homes.

It is open weekdays from noon to 5 p.m. and weekends from noon to 6 p.m. It is closed on major holidays and is the only animal shelter in the county that accepts horses and livestock. The shelter’s address is 12370 Murphy Ave. in San Martin.
