art in:FOCUS lecture series: “Fashions of the Body in Western Art”

The art in:FOCUS lecture series season kicks off with a lecture by Christy Junkerman, PhD titled “Fashions of the Body in Western Art.”  The topic explores the nude in western art and the changes in the depiction of the body over time.  Professor Junkerman states: “If the naked body is, as Shakespeare said, a ‘poor forked thing’ and often a source of shame, the nude is a fiction, an idealizing invention of the ancient Greeks.  It is not a constant in western culture, but when it appears, it has served as a useful vehicle to express a whole range of values and desires.”

Christy Junkerman earned her PhD in Art History from UC Berkeley. She is an instructor of European art history in the Department of Art and Art History at San Jose State University, and also taught at Stanford and Berkeley.  For many years she was a Resident Fellow in a Stanford dormitory.  An avid traveler, Junkerman has lectured on nine trips to Europe for Stanford Alumni Association and coordinated the CSU Summer Arts course in Florence in 2011.  She recently gave a series of lectures at the Fine Arts Museums in San Francisco.

For your pre-lecture dining pleasure,
a rotating menu of foodie delectables will be featured throughout the season! Sweet and savory empanadas from Mmoon! --a new addition to Los Gatos--will be featured this Thursday!
