Gluten Free Play Dough With The Kids

Looking for a fun way to spend an afternoon with your child? Then why not make some play dough together? Playdough activities are a sensory rich way develop fine motor skills and have fun, and this recipe has the added benefit of being gluten free.  Studies have shown that up to .6% of children have gluten allergies and it can be difficult to find recipes without things like wheat in them. So here is a look at not only how to make gluten free play dough, but how to incorporate your child in the process.

You’ll be amazed at how easy it is to make play dough with your kids. Here is what you will need:

  • ½ cup rice flour
  • ½ cup cornstarch
  • ½ cup salt
  • 2 tsp. cream of tarter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp. cooking oil
  • Food coloring, if desired

Now let’s get started on the play dough fun! Have your child dump all the ingredients into a big bowl and mix everything together, using their hands to really dig into the mixture. The runny goo provides excellent tactile input, so encourage children to get right in it and explore the material. Make sure your child crumples up any lumps they feel so their play dough will be nice and smooth. Note how the color of the mixture is cloudy before it is cooked.
