Inaugural 'Day On The Lake' Planned For Persons With Disabilities

Accessible sailing and adaptive kayaking are among the aquatic activities planned for Saturday at Vasona Lake County Park.

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA — The County of Santa Clara Parks & Recreation Department and Santa Clara Valley Medical Center have come together to offer the county's first-ever Day on The Lake, an event to make water-related activities more accessible and inclusive for persons with disabilities.

There will be demonstrations of accessible sailing, the opportunity to try out adaptive kayaking and outrigger canoeing, and a variety of other activities. Complementary lunch will also be offered as part of Day on the Lake, set to take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 2 at Vasona Lake County Park boat center, 333 Blossom Hill Road in Los Gatos.

Past and current patients of the Rehabilitation Center at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, staff, families and anyone in the disabled community with an interest in water activities is welcome to attend. The event is sponsored by the Valley Medical Center Foundation (VMC Foundation) and partner organizations that provide a range of disability services.

"The goal of this event is to help reduce or eliminate obstacles that persons with physical and neurological disability encounter around the water," said Ann Perkins of Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.

"With 840 miles of ocean shoreline, thousands of lakes and reservoirs, and hundreds of rivers and large
creeks, California offers an abundance of riches for water enthusiasts," Perkins said. "But for most of the survivors of spinalcord injury, brain injury or stroke, those riches are not readily available, mainly due to limitations on access and other challenges. This inaugural event expects to overcome some of those obstacles."
