Opus of the Soul

Margaret Wingrove Dance Company Takes the Stage at California Theater in San Jose

Award-winning choreographer Margaret Wingrove blends modern dance and ballet techniques with high energy and physicality in her latest production, Opus of the Soul, which runs May 22 and 23 at California Theatre in San Jose. The production showcases guests San Francisco Ballet dancers Principal Tiit Hilimets and Principal dancer Frances Chung who perform the “Black Swan pas de deux” from Swan Lake as well as the new work “Belle Nuit,” dedicated in memory of Irene Dalis (founder of Opera San Jose). This work, choreographed by Ms. Wingrove to the music of Offenbach’s famous Bacarolle, is accompanied by guest singers from Opera San Jose with live music from the San Jose Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Maestra Barbara Day Turner.

The program also features dancers from San Jose Dance Theatre performing in Ms. Wingrove’s new work “Judy – Songs From the Heart”, a medley of famous Judy Garland favorites in a delightful excerpt of “Over the Rainbow” depicting The Wizard of Oz.

In addition, there are several critically praised pieces from Margaret Wingrove Dance Company’s repertoire appearing on this program that round out an exciting and inspired evening of dance and music.
