Police Arrest Pair on Suspicion of Elder Financial Abuse, Other Crimes

The suspect tried to cash the woman's stolen personal check and left an ID behind.

Police arrested two people Monday, after officers connected them to the theft of personal items belonging to an elderly woman over the weekend in Campbell.

The victim called police Saturday to report that someone had taken her prescription eyeglasses and her checkbook from her unattended mobility scooter, which was parked in the underground parking lot of her residence on Winchester Boulevard, according to police.

The victim told police that shortly after, her bank called to notify her that someone had attempted to cash one of her personal checks, police said.

Officers were able to obtain an ID card that had been left at the bank, along with surveillance images of the two suspects and their vehicle, according to police.

Officers positively identified one of the suspects and arrived at her home in San Jose. There, they found Violet Loza, 32, and detained her, police said.

At the home officers also found a man that resembled the second suspect in the surveillance images. Officers identified him as San Jose resident Rudy Escobar, 28, and discovered he was on probation, according to police.

Officers then conducted a probation search and found Escobar to be in possession of the victim’s stolen checkbook, as well as her prescription glasses, police said.

The search also yielded numerous bags of possible stolen mail, driver’s licenses, social security cards and debit cards belonging to other people, according to police.

At the same time, an auto glass repair company was outside the residence, repairing windows on one of the suspects’ vehicle. Officers discovered a check for over $1,000 had been made out to the company, with the victim’s stolen checkbook, police said.

Officers arrested the pair on suspicion of elder financial abuse, possession of bank account numbers, personal identification theft, forgery, conspiracy and narcotics violations, according to police.

Loza and Escobar have been booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail, police said.
