Santa Clara County Reports 158 New Coronavirus Cases, 1 Death

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA — The Santa Clara County Public Health Department reported 158 additional coronavirus cases Tuesday.

The latest announcement brings the countywide COVID-19 case count to 9,359.

The county reported one additional coronavirus-related fatalities Tuesday, bringing its COVID-19 death toll to 185.

There were 174 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Santa Clara County as of Tuesday, of which 57 were being treated in intensive care units.

Elsewhere around the Bay Area and beyond, another San Quentin State Prison death row inmate died from what may have been complications from COVID-19, state corrections officials said Sunday. Johnny Avila Jr., 62, was pronounced dead Sunday morning at a hospital outside the prison, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The coroner will determine the exact cause of death, CDCR officials said.

Santa Cruz County has been placed on the state's monitoring list for counties experiencing an increased spread of COVID-19, county officials said Monday. The list stipulates that certain sectors of the economy must close or modify their operations as soon as 12:01 a.m. Tuesday. Places that must modify their operations include gyms and fitness centers, personal care services, places of worship and cultural ceremonies, indoor shopping malls and offices for infrastructure sectors that aren't critical.

Councilmembers in Daly City Monday evening voted unanimously to put a measure on the November ballot to help residents and businesses recover from the pandemic, city officials said. The one-half-cent sales tax, if approved, will help maintain emergency equipment and apparatus, paramedic services and 911 emergency response, clean streets and the city's financial stability.

There were 467,649 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 8,604 coronavirus-related deaths in California as of Tuesday afternoon according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

The United States had 4,342,498 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 149,085 coronavirus-related fatalities as of Tuesday afternoon.

There have been 16,607,203 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 657,686 deaths reported globally as of Tuesday afternoon.
