Santa Clara County Reports 280 New Coronavirus Cases, 2 Deaths

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA — The Santa Clara County Public Health Department reported 280 additional coronavirus cases Tuesday.

The latest report brings the countywide COVID-19 case count to 12,962.

The county reported two additional coronavirus-related fatalities, bringing its COVID-19 death toll to 207.

There were 180 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Santa Clara County as of Tuesday, of which 51 were being treated in intensive care units.

Elsewhere around the Bay Area and beyond, with area laboratories overwhelmed by a growing volume of COVID-19 coronavirus testing leading to "significant delays" in test result returns, Contra Costa Health Services is beefing up its lab capacity, and is opening two new testing centers this week in West County, health officials said Tuesday.

This comes as the community spread of the coronavirus continues, especially in Contra Costa County's communities of color, according to Dr. Erika Jenssen of Contra Costa Health Services.

The Pac-12 Conference announced Tuesday that it has postponed all sports through the end of 2020 due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

The Pac-12 CEO Group unanimously voted to postpone the fall sports calendar after consulting with the conference's Medical Advisory Committee over concerns for player and coach safety.

Pac-12 officials also said they would consider a return of postponed sports in spring 2021 if conditions improve. The University of California at Berkeley and Stanford University are the two Bay Area schools in the Pac-12.

The San Francisco Public Library began rolling out its SFPL To Go program on Monday and Tuesday, offering front door service for cardholders to pick up and return materials.

The program marks the library's reopening since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Library officials hope to expand it to more locations next month, but for now the service will be offered at the Main Library, starting Monday, and the Excelsior Branch, starting Tuesday.

Future locations will include the Mission Bay, Eureka Valley, Merced and Marina branches. Other locations could also open up, depending on the availability of workers, as many library staff members are currently deployed as disaster workers.

There have been 578,946 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 10,528 coronavirus-related deaths in California as of Tuesday afternoon according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

The United States had 5,139,920 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 164,502 coronavirus-related fatalities as of Tuesday afternoon.

There have been 20,196,850 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 738,910 deaths reported globally as of Tuesday afternoon.
