Santa Clara County Reports 29 New Coronavirus Cases, 1 Death

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA — The Santa Clara County Public Health Department reported 29 additional cases of the new coronavirus Monday.

The report, which covers a two-day period going back to Saturday, brings the countywide total of COVID-19 cases to 2,805.

The county reported one additional coronavirus-related fatality, bringing its death toll at 142.
There are currently 46 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Santa Clara County, of which 11 are being treated in intensive care units.

The Mountain View City Council on Friday approved the extension of a local urgency ordinance suspending evictions for nonpayment of rent for residential tenants. The extension of tenant protections through Aug. 31 is for households that qualify due to hardship related to the novel coronavirus emergency.

Elsewhere around the Bay Area and beyond, five locations of the Berkeley Public Library remain closed for the time being, but the book drops have reopened for patrons to return books and media items.

"All returns will be quarantined for at least 72 hours, as is recommended by conservation experts," the library said in an announcement. Due dates on borrowed material has been extended to July 1.

Contra Costa Civic Theatre in El Cerrito has postponed its 2020-21 season, as well as its scheduled July and August production of "Crowns" due to novel coronavirus health concerns.

Vitalant, formerly known as Blood Centers of the Pacific, announced Monday that it will begin testing all blood donations for COVID-19 coronavirus antibodies. Donations of all blood types are sorely needed in the Bay Area. In particular, blood types O, A-negative and B-negative are critically needed in Bay Area hospitals.

There have been 112,979 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 4,184 coronavirus-related deaths in California as of Monday afternoon according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

The United States had 1,808,291 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 105,003 coronavirus-related fatalities as of Monday afternoon.
