Santa Clara County Reports 827 New Coronavirus Cases, 33 Deaths
There were 614 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in the county as of Tuesday, of which 136 were being treated in intensive care units.
SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA — The Santa Clara County Public Health Department reported 827 additional coronavirus cases Tuesday.
The latest report brings the countywide case count to 94,366.
The county reported 33 additional coronavirus-related fatalities Tuesday, bringing its COVID-19 death toll to 1,109.

Elsewhere around the Bay Area and beyond, the United States passed a grim milestone Tuesday as it surpassed 400,000 deaths, The New York Times reports.

Especially concerning is the pace at which the number of deaths has been accelerating as the pandemic spins out of control.
It took more than three months from when the first case was reported in Santa Clara County on Feb. 6 of last year to May 27 for the United States to experience its first 100,000 deaths. It took just five weeks for the nation to add the most recent 100,000 deaths according to the report.
President-elect Joe Biden’s transition team described a culture of denialism about the pandemic in the Trump administration, CNN reports.
Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris spoke at a tribute to those killed by the coronavirus as the reflections of 400,000 lights commemorating the dead were seen Tuesday evening at the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool, NPR reports.
"The general takeaway was that many of the career folks were relatively compliant and took Covid seriously," a source familiar with the transition's findings told CNN.
"There was political direction, though, in a lot of places, that kind of set the set the tone."
State Sen. Josh Becker, D-Menlo Park, will on Thursday host an online town hall to discuss the latest COVID-19 developments, including vaccine availability.
The event, which is free, will take place online from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday.Becker represents the 13th State Senate District, which includes San Mateo and Santa Clara counties, and will be joined by Dr. Anand Chabra, San Mateo County Health's section chief for COVID-19 mass vaccination, and Dr. Mark Adams, El Camino Hospital's chief medical officer.

The United States had 24,233,759 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 401,362 coronavirus-related fatalities as of Tuesday afternoon.
