Santa Clara County Under Heat Advisory

Officials warned of extreme fire risks and hazards — and said cooling centers will be open throughout the county this weekend.

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA — With Santa Clara County under a National Weather Service heat advisory this weekend, law enforcement and public health officials urged residents to take precautions. Temperatures in San Jose will likely reach the upper 90s and in areas from Redwood City to Cupertino temperatures will reach up to 100 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Some parts of the county may even experience temps as high as 105 degrees.

Los Gatos, Campbell and Mountain View are expected to see highs of around 99 degrees Saturday; Saratoga and Milpitas, 98 degrees; Los Altos and Gilroy, 102 degrees; Palo Alto, 100 degrees; Cupertino, 94; Santa Clara, 96; and San Jose, 93 degrees.

Officials said to avoid strenuous outdoor activity, stay in cool locations and drink lots of water. Free public cooling centers will be open throughout the county.

In addition to heat-related illnesses, San Jose police warned residents that the heat wave may also cause extreme fire risk and hazards. With a red flag warning in effect for parts of the Bay Area, all residents are asked to avoid any activities that could spark a fire, such as barbecuing, tossing cigarettes and having campfires.

There is also a possibility of power outages. PG&E meteorologists are predicting Saturday to be the hottest day of the year; therefore, the utility company advised its customers to prepare for outages.
