SC Co. Sheriff’s Cadet Dies After Collapsing In Training: Report

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA — A Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Academy cadet died after collapsing during training Tuesday at a facility in Morgan Hill, The San Jose Mercury News reports.

The cadet collapsed shortly after completing a training exercise and died later in the day at Regional Medical Center of San Jose, the report said.

The cadet had been training to be a jail deputy and was a few weeks away from graduation according to the report.

The Sheriff’s Office confirmed the death but hasn’t identified the cadet by name.

The Mercury, citing multiple sources, confirmed the cadet was Koichi John Nishimura, 39 of San Jose, according to the report.

Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith said in a prepared statement that the circumstances of the cadet’s death are under review, according to the report.

“It is with great sadness we report the unexpected passing of one of our recruits,” the statement said.

“The recruit had been participating in defensive tactics training at the academy yesterday. We are currently reviewing the information and circumstances.”
