South Bay Suspects Rented Apartments Under Stolen IDs: Police
Victims incurred over $100,000 in unpaid rent, according to the Santa Clara Police Department.
SAN JOSE, CA — The Santa Clara Police Department arrested two suspects on suspicion of identity theft last week after an investigation that began in January.
According to a news release, the suspects, Edwina Bogan and Shawnece Ford, possessed identifying information of over 100 potential victims. The suspects used a stolen identity to rent apartments in Santa Clara and San Jose, police said, and took advantage of a moratorium on evictions to evade paying rent. This resulted in over $100,000 in unpaid rent for victims, according to police.
Santa Clara police served a search warrant for Bogan and Ford in San Jose on Mar. 4, according to a news release. Police added that they located five more fraudulent rentals connected to the suspects.
