Students Create Los Gatos Cookbook

Four Los Gatos High School students have created the Los Gatos Cookbook as part of an English curriculum entrepreneur project.

The $25 cookbook features recipes from local restaurants such as Forbes Mill Steakhouse, Wine Cellar, Cin-Cin and Katsu, to name a few, and includes about $400 in discounts toward these restaurants, explained student Demi Chang.

Also, proceeds from the cookbook's sale benefit the American Cancer Society, she added.

"Our group has several relatives that have passed from cancer, and so we want to contribute to the American Cancer Society. It is our way to support and remember our loved ones," Chang said.

The students, all sophomores, are part of Los Gatos High School's English 10 honors class, and include Chang, Sarah Ma, Rachelle Stein and Chloe Loomer.

Some of the coolest recipes in the cookbook include the Sweet Pea's Cafe's Nutella Muffin Recipe, Nick's Next Door's Banana Bread Pudding recipe, Billy's Boston House's Dungeness Stuffed Crab Mushrooms and Main Street Burger's Salted Caramel Shake, according to Chang.

The English 10 honors class does the entrepreneur project every year helping students develop communication and entrepreneurial skills, she said.

There are two periods of English 10 honors participating in the project, with 11 entrepreneur groups total, Chang explained.

Other entrepreneur groups include Oh Fudge, the Cookie Jar, DeCats Stickers (Los Gatos Decals), Lil' Miss Muffin and Cat's Crispies, Chang added.

The students printed 200 cookbooks, which cost $1,000. However, as of Sunday morning, they had already made more than $3,000 in profit by selling about 180 books.

During a sale Sunday in front of Los Gatos' Le Boulanger, next to the town's busy farmers' market, the students were hoping to sell the rest.

The cookbook also features recipes from Amour Patisserie, California Cafe,  Gardino's, James Randall, Mmoon, Opa!, Palacio, The Pastaria, Three Degrees, Viva and Wine Cellar.
