Memorial Day Beachgoers Warned Of Elevated Bacteria At These SoCal Shores

LOS ANGELES, CA — As beachgoers head to the coast for the long Memorial Day weekend, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health on Friday warned people to avoid ocean waters at several beaches because of elevated bacteria levels.

The affected beach areas are:

-- Topanga Canyon Beach in Malibu, 100 yards up and down the coast from the lagoon;

-- Ramirez Creek at Paradise Cove, 100 yards up and down the coast from the pier; and

-- Inner Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro, entire swim area.

Health officials said the warnings were issued after recent water samples showed bacteria levels exceeding state health standards, which could increase the risk of illness.

Meanwhile, a warning was lifted for the following beach area where recent sample results identified water quality levels within state standards:

-- Castlerock storm drain at Topanga County Beach.
