Malibu Removes Graffiti From Fire-Damaged Properties

MALIBU, CA —Malibu has begun removing graffiti from fire-damaged properties along Pacific Coast Highway as part of a new pilot program aimed at supporting recovery efforts in areas impacted by the Palisades Fire.

City officials announced that the graffiti removal effort got underway in late May and focuses on private properties within Malibu city limits that sustained fire damage and have graffiti visible from public streets.

The voluntary Graffiti Abatement Pilot Program is designed to reduce blight, discourage repeat vandalism, improve public safety and help support rebuilding efforts in fire-affected neighborhoods, according to the city.

The city's Code Enforcement Division and Public Works Department completed the first round of graffiti removal work last week.

So far, officials have identified 61 eligible properties. Signed participation agreements have been received from 29 property owners, while another 28 consent forms remain pending. Graffiti has already been removed from seven properties. Three property owners declined to participate, according to the city.

Because the program involves work on private property, property owners must grant permission before crews can begin graffiti removal. City staff members will continue contacting owners through phone calls, emails and follow-up outreach to encourage participation and answer questions.

The pilot program is scheduled to remain in place through April 12, 2027.

Property owners who want graffiti removed through the program must submit a signed Trespass Authorization form to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Owners of fire-damaged homes and businesses can begin the process by contacting Malibu Code Enforcement at Code@MalibuCity.org or by calling City Hall at 310-456-2489.

Graffiti located within public rights-of-way continues to be handled by Caltrans and Malibu Public Works officials. Residents can report graffiti along state roadways to Caltrans at 213-897-1200 or contact Malibu Public Works at 310-456-2489, ext. 391.
